School Jazz Seminars

ABOUT THE SEMINARS: The  Victorian Jazz Archive is pleased to offer your school **FREE** Jazz Seminars for students who have been playing 1-2 years to provide an introduction to Jazz Improvisation and an advanced Jazz seminar for VCE Music students to assist in their VCE music studies. These seminars are run under the direction of Marina Pollard.

LOCATION:  The Jazz Seminars will be held at the Victorian Jazz Archive ( 15 Mountain Highway, Wantirna )

DURATION: The Jazz Seminars will be run between 10am and 2pm on the 2nd, 4th or 5th Wednesday of the month and involve two, 2 hour visits to the Archive.

PROGRAMS:                                                                                                                                     The Beginner Jazz Seminars provide students with instructions in improvisation and chart reading by Professional jazz musicians, along with a booklet of music and backing CD.

The Advanced Jazz Seminars provide VCE students with an understanding of Jazz Improvisation.

At the end of each seminar a recording of your students will be made for each student and the school to keep.

ATTENDEES:                                                                                                                                      The Beginner Jazz Seminars are ideal for schools wishing to include Jazz in their program, but are not confident about where to begin (or do not have enough students to form a Big Band).  Seminars will be restricted to 5-8 players of Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Piano, Guitar, Bass and Drums. It is not necessary to provide a balanced group for these seminars

The Advanced Jazz Seminars are ideal for VCE students who are studying Jazz and to enlighten them in the art of Jazz Improvisation.  There is no restriction as to group numbers or combination of instruments.

GROUP VISITS: The Victorian Jazz Archive also arranges free Group Visits for up to 20 VCE music students to explain its purpose, provide an extensive tour of the Archive, see a live jazz band performance and includes light refreshments. This would be an ideal resource for students studying Music Investigation who were interested in Jazz as their focus area.

JUNIOR WORKSHOP:                                                                                                                  For your more experienced players, the Victorian Under 25's Jazz Improvisation Workshop is an ideal way to meet other young up and coming jazz musicians. Information on these workshops is enclosed in this web site.

COSTS: The Jazz Seminars are offered at no cost to schools. A school Membership of $40 per year is available which allows up to 20 students exclusive use of the Archive and its facilities.  Membership is not a prerequisite for school programs.
